Memories from the 70’s…

My friend Michelle emailed this to me and I related to so many of them I just had to share…

Remember being a little girl in the 70’s???

  • You had that Fisher Price Doctor’s Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked. (Nope, my dad was a chiropractor. None of the medical tools of the trade for his daughter!)
  • You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a plastic basket with flowers on it. (I don’t think my basket had flowers. But I remember dreams of delivering newspapers with it!)
  • You learned to skate with actual skates (not roller blades) and they had furry pom pons on them. (No way Jose, it was the metal skates that fit over shoes for me)
  • You thought Gopher from Love Boat was cute (admit it!). (Yea, I did)
  • You had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island. (Loved it, but it did weird me out sometimes)
  • You had either a "bowl cut" or "pixie", not to mention the "Dorothy Hamill". People sometimes thought you were a boy. (Yep, one bad pixie cut that made me look like a boy had me crying for quite a while. I don’t think my mother ever suggested I get my hair cut short again)
  • You had rubber boots for rainy days and Moon boots for snowy days. (Nah, don’t think so)
  •  You owned a "Slip-n-Slide", on which you injured yourself on a sprinkler head more than once. (Nope, again my dad was a chiropractor. He didn’t want me damaging his hard work. Course if I had invited friends over maybe we could have drummed up more business…)
  •  You owned "Klick-Klacks" and smacked yourself in the face more than once. (Loved em)
  •  Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession. (Don’t think I had one)
  •  You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers.(Nope I was more into garanimals in the 70s)
  • You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon. (Oh yea baby, and I still love it!)
  • You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple satiny shredded outfits, or the sunshine family. (Nope. I wasn’t into that stuff)
  • You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze. The swing set rocked like crazy and tipped over at least once. (Never had one. Just played on friends)
  • You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color. (Oh yea, those were more in the 80s though… or maybe my small town was just behind times)
  • You had a pair of Doctor Scholl’s sandals. You also had a pair of salt-water sandals, or "jellies". (No Dr. Scholls. But I think my mom had some. Loved the jellies though and cringe remembering them now!)
  •  You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture; and you despised Nellie Oleson! (Yea, I think that was my 3rd grade picture)
  • You wanted your first kiss to be at a roller rink! (Ha!)
  • PONG! ("video tennis" ) was the most remarkable futuristic game you’d ever heard of. (Oh yea.. and we rented VCR players and videos from the video store for slumber parties!)
  •  Your hairstyle was described as having "wings" or "feathers" and you kept  it "pretty"with the comb you kept in your back pocket. (Well I tried. The perfect feathers were  a sign of social status and I umm… just couldn’t ever get mine just right.)
  • You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie. (Oh yea, loved those scented little dolls.)
  • You carried a Muppets lunch box to school and it was metal, not plastic, With the thermos inside some were glass inside and broke the first time you dropped them. (Nope, I always ate the school lunch. Maybe my mom didn’t let me have one because of how easy they were to break. I was/am a klutz!)
  • You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend. (Well we didn’t fight over the, but…)
  • YOU had Star Wars action figures, too! (I had a light sabre with the inflatable sword part that lit up. Totally cool. And got the Star Wars glasses from Hardees or something. Those would probably be collectibles now, huh?)
  •  It was a big event in your household each year when the "Wizard of Oz" would come on TV. Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags! (I don’t specifically remember Wizard of Oz, but I can remember doing Jiffy Pop was a BIG treat!)
  •  You often asked your Magic-8 ball the question: "Who will I marry. Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or Donny Osmond?" (Ewww. didn’t like them)
  • You completely wore out your Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Fame soundtrack record album. (Yep, now we’re talking)
  • You tried to do lots of arts and crafts, like yarn and Popsicle-stick God’s eyes, decoupage, or those weird potholders made on a plastic loom. (Totally)
  • You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on kittens on your t-shirts! (No telling how many shrinky dinks went through our oven!)
  • You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the speaker. (Oh yea, and then you could write the lyrics…)
  • You had subscriptions to Dynamite and Tiger Beat. (Seems like Tiger Beat and Teen Beat were the must reads)
  • You learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books. (Are you there God, It’s me, Margaret.) (Uh huh)
  • You thought Olivia Newton John’s song "Physical" was about aerobics. (You mean it wasn’t?!)
  • You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs. (Guilty)
  •  You wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer. (Sad, but true)
  •  You drowned yourself in Love’s Baby Soft – which was the first "real" perfume you ever owned. (Oh wow, yes, I had totally forgotten about that!)
  • You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip-gloss till it almost dripped off. Strawberry and Dr. Pepper were the best.  You also owned several tubes of Bonnie Bell lip gloss in a variety of flavors. (Seems like there was a rootbeer flavor too. Those lip glosses could have been their own food group!)

The Tale of the Missing Shirt and the Killer Shoes

Well remember a while back when I asked for your opinions on finding a dress for Tony’s company banquet?  Well I thought I had found the perfect outfit! THOUGHT being the operative phrase.

See a few people recommended for reasonable prices and clothes that fit well. So I picked out an outfit and ordered. Of course I also first looked for online coupons – found one for free shipping and read some reviews.  And I should have paid attention to the reviews.

There were quite a few negative ones from people who had shipping problems. Guess what happened? I got the skirt, but not the top.  Two days before we had to go! I was SO upset. They said there wasn’t any way that they could get the top to me so I was back to basically square one.

Fortunately I had time to make one more shopping trip and my mother-in-law helped me find this black sweater set to wear. Of course that totally cancelled out my excuse of "I can’t go, I don’t have anything to wear" and staying home to quilt. Drat!

I was glad that I got to go though – even though I do believe that the heels I was wearing could officially be called Satan’s shoes. Tony actually won an award for his sales – Yippee! AND a year’s worth of free gas – 2 big industrial sized cans of pork-n-beans. Ha ha! Gotta love those food distributor jokes!

Then I got to spend the next day working on my quilt with my mother-in-law. Wow, things go SO much faster when you have someone to iron the seams while you sew. I’m allllllllmost done with the top now and it is SO exciting!

Visit me at HomesteadBlogger

Well I love blogging here, but my new love of quilting is helping/forcing me to spend a little less time in blogdom. I just set up a new blog over at HomesteadBlogger since I’m the Senior Editor there and all so I just wanted to invite you all to come visit me there.

Today I posted an entry about my Adventures in Bread Baking. It’s even got a handy-dandy recipe and everything. And when you come visit, please comment and give me the link to your blog. I’m going to add a blogroll once I have a chance and I want to have your blogs listed there!

The Gift of Yourself

Quilt update:
I called my friend Alethia to ask her a few questions about what comes next with my quilt. I also wanted to buy a cutting mat since I somehow managed to lose mine so she offered to come over and look at my stuff and go shopping with me.

That’s the key. She didn’t just tell me what to do. She went with me.

See she got over here and after doing a WHOLE bunch of math figured out that I didn’t have enough material. Now it’s been a LONG time since I bought this material so I had that sinking feeling that I might not be able to get more of what I was using. Trying to be optimistic though, off we went.

We got to the fabric store and sure enough, there wasn’t any more of my material. At this point I was SO glad that she was with me. I really might have just melted down right there if she hadn’t been. We had discussed a border already though as Plan B and so we hunted for just the right fabric for my new Plan B border.

It took a bit of hunting since the color palette has changed, but I found a great floral that is going to coordinate nicely. So I’m optimistic once again.

And I’m thankful that my friend is willing to hold my hand and walk me through it. What a wonderful gift.
